The pearlescent pigments produced today are mainly mica titanium type, which is based on mica, flake quartz, flake alumina or flake glass powder, and is coated with a high refractive index metal oxide transparent film on its surface. When the light hits the flat interface of the pearlescent pigment, it will produce reflected light and refracted-reflected light, and they interfere with each other to produce a strong three-dimensional pearlescent color.

Because the pearlescent pigment made of ordinary muscovite cannot withstand the high temperature of enamel firing, the pearlescent pigment for enamel will be based on high temperature-resistant synthetic fluorphlogopite flakes, and the hydrate of titanium dioxide will be coated on the mica. The difference in refractive index with mica produces pearlescent effect, and is coated with refractory oxides such as tin dioxide to resist the erosion of pearlescent pigments by enamel frit at high temperature.

Pearlescent pigments are sensitive to firing temperature, and a lower firing temperature is beneficial to them. It can only be used in special transparent enamel frits, and care should not be taken to introduce opaque components to prevent affecting the pearlescent effect. When using, the pearlescent pigments cannot be ground together with the enamel frit, the enamel frit should be ground well, and then the pearlescent pigments are added and stirred evenly.
