Information

There are many pretreatment methods for enamel, including degreasing pickling method, oil-burning pickling method, and oil-burning sandblasting method. Because the characteristics of enamel metal are different, the pretreatment methods are also different, which requires selection and skill to do a good job of surface pretreatment. Today, we mainly distinguish the surface pretreatment for common cast iron, steel and stainless steel.

There are two kinds of steel plates for enamel, cold-rolled and hot-rolled. Although the surface of cold-rolled steel plate is coated with grease, it may still corrode due to factors such as storage conditions and time. However, the surface of the hot-rolled steel sheet has original oxide layer and rust, and the iron billet which is annealed and degreased at high temperature also has an uneven oxide layer on the surface. Rusted iron billets must be thoroughly derusted. Pickling is a chemical reaction between acid and the oxide layer and rust on the surface of the iron billet to generate various iron salts dissolved in water, which are separated from the iron billet to achieve the purpose of rust removal.

The surface pretreatment of enameled cast iron is different from that of enameled steel plate. If the enameled cast iron adopts the pickling method, the acid and cast iron are prone to generate hydrogen gas, and bubbles or other enamel defects will be generated during firing. Therefore, the pretreatment of enameled cast iron is annealed. Or sandblasting (shot blasting).

The pretreatment of stainless steel is different from that of ordinary steel plates. Because stainless steel is not easy to be fully oxidized at general enamelling temperature, the stainless steel body needs to be pre-oxidized before enamel coating, so as to increase the infiltration and spreading of the enamel on the stainless steel surface at the firing temperature, and improve the adhesion strength of the stainless steel enamel. Another difference between the pretreatment of stainless steel and ordinary steel plate is that the surface of stainless steel needs to be sandblasted to roughen the surface of the body to improve the mechanical adhesion between the enamel layer and the stainless steel body.
