The difference between low-carbon steel and cast iron can be determined by the carbon content: steel with a carbon content below 0.006~2.06%, and cast iron with a carbon content above. When cast iron melts, if the silicon content is high and the cooling is slow, a large amount of carbon will be precipitated into graphite, and the cross section will be gray, which is called gray cast iron or gray iron; A large amount of iron carbide (Fe₃C) has a silver cross-section and is called white cast iron, also known as white iron.

White iron is not suitable for enamel materials because carbides are easy to decompose, releasing CO and CO₂ gases, which are easy to cause defects, and are too brittle and hard. Gray iron, because the carbon exists in flake-like free graphite, can be well combined with enamel, and itself is slightly tough, so it is suitable for making iron blanks for enamel materials.
