Clay
The main function of clay is to make enamel slurry of suspension property, enhance the mechanical strength of dry powder body, at the same time expand the firing temperature range of enamel frit.
The usage amount of clay for daily enamel ground coat and cover coat is about 6-8g for every 100g enamel frit(weight ratio). Transparent frit about 5-6.5, industrial acid resistant ground coat will need about 10, industrial cover coat about 3-3.5, there is no clay needed for cast iron cover coat.
Impurities contains in clay will affect its quality. For example, organics will bring bubbles, pores and black dots defects on enamel surface. Iron oxide will make titanium white cover coat become yellowish so reduce its whiteness. For acid resistant blue enamel cover coat Impurities contains in clay will make SiO2 and Al2O3 contents changed, then affect its acid resistance feature.
When Clay is over used, it will make enamel surface rough, reduce its glossy and acid resistance feature.

Quartz
Quartz is used in ground coat, using amount about 5-10g for every 100g enamel frit(weight ratio). It will make enamel frit with higher fire-resistance and enhance chemical and thermal stability of enamel slurry.

Borax
Borax is mainly used in ground coat, using amount is about 0.5g for every 100 enamel frit(weight ratio). It can prevent rust, decrease burned spot. Its over using will cause boiling or burning when firing.
Antimony Oxide
Antimony oxide is used in Sb-Mo ground coat, it’s function as covering agents and brightener. Make enamel surface whiter and with better covering power. Using amount is about 0.5-1g for every 100g enamel frit(weight ratio).
Barium Molybdenum
Barium Molybdenum is used in Sb-Mo ground coat, It works as adherence promoters, makes enamel coating stronger adherence with steel plate. Using amount is about 0.5-1g for every 100g enamel frit(weight ratio).
Nickel Protoxide
Nickel is a very important component in the enamel ground coat. The price of Nickel protoxide has a greater impact on the cost of enamel, although its addition is usually very tiny.
In order to strengthen the adhesion between the ground coat and steel, ground coat containing 0.4% of Nickel protoxide is usually applied, and 1.5% of manganese oxide and 0.3% -0.6 of Cobalt oxide are added to enhance the adhesion. Nickel protoxide added in ground coat can also make the ground coat more fish-scale resistant.
There are many reasons why a small amount of Nickel protoxide promote the adhesion of ground coat and steel:
1. Enamel frit with Nickel protoxide can corrode the steel surface and cause the surface to be rough, thus strengthening the adhesion between the enamel and the steel.
2. During firing, a little iron oxide melts and enters the ground coat. If the ground coat contains Nickel protoxide, its melting concentration can be controlled to produce the best conditions for the ground coat to be tightly bonded to the steel plate.
